SCO2OP-TES
sCO2 Operating Pumped Thermal Energy Storage for grid/industry cooperation
SCO2OP-TES develops and tests advanced energy storage technology, P2H2P, to store renewable energy on a large scale in Europe. It enhances flexibility in fossil fuel power plants and aids industrial grid connections. The project, led by a partnership of SMEs, research organizations, and industrial partners, builds Europe's first pilot plant. This technology, leveraging waste heat, aims to optimize energy storage efficiency and grid flexibility. It positions Europe as a leader in P2H2P solutions, promoting waste heat recovery and eco-friendly storage alternatives.
A novel thermally integrated pumped thermal energy storage (TI-PTES) based on sCO2 machines can overcome the limits ofCarnot Batteries with higher RTEs and less complex architecture. A TI-PTES driven by freely available heat (WH, thermal RES…) also makesEU industries/fossil-based power plants more efficient, flexible and able to offer different grid services and facilitate RES penetration.
