At the final RESTORE DHC event, Prof. Marco Astolfi from project partner Politecnico di Milano had the opportunity to present the SCO2OP-TES project.

On July 24th, the SCO2OP-TES project reached an important milestone with the successful completion of its first review meeting held in Brussels, Belgium. This meeting marked the halfway point of the project, providing an invaluable opportunity to review and assess the progress made during the first 18 months of research and development.
The review meeting brought together all project partners, who presented detailed updates on their respective work packages and shared insights into the technical advancements achieved so far. It also served as a platform for open discussion, allowing partners to exchange feedback and coordinate efforts to address challenges and optimize upcoming activities.
A sincere thank you to all participants for their commitment and valuable contributions during the meeting. Their active engagement continues to drive the success of the SCO2OP-TES project as it moves toward its goals.
SCO2OP-TES PRESENTED AT ASME TURBO EXPO 2025 .

Memphis, USA, 16 June 2025
On June 16, the SCO2OP-TES project was presented at the prestigious ASME Turbo Expo during the R&D Panel held in Memphis, USA. The session was chaired by Stefano Barberis and Rafael Guedez, bringing together experts and researchers from across the energy sector.
Now 18 months into the project, this was a valuable opportunity to share key updates on SCO2OP-TES and to contribute to a broader discussion on Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) initiatives in both Europe and the United States.

From June 10 to 12, the SCO2OP-TES project proudly participated in the European Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2025 in Brussels, Belgium. This flagship event brought together stakeholders from across Europe to discuss and promote sustainable energy solutions.
SCO2OP-TES was represented at a shared stand as part of the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Cluster, joining forces with two fellow Horizon Europe projects: SEHRENE EU and AIR4NRG.
The stand served as a collaborative platform to showcase each project's unique contributions to the future of energy storage and decarbonization.
Our team had the opportunity to engage with policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders—highlighting our progress and exchanging insights on advancing innovative energy technologies.

SCO2OP-TES AT THIRD STORIES SUMMER SCHOOL .

Safeer Mehdi is currently attending the Third StoRIES Summer School 2025, taking place from June 10 to 12 in Trondheim, Norway. The event is co-hosted by SINTEF and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
This year’s summer school focuses on “Mid- to Long-term Hybrid Energy Storage” and brings together experts and early-career researchers to explore innovative energy storage solutions. The program highlights the importance of hybrid systems in achieving a sustainable and resilient energy transition.

SCO2OP-TES AT THE SOLINDARITY WORKSHOP .

On May 27th, our team members Hassan and Safeer participated in a specialized workshop hosted in Genova, Italy, and organized by the SOLINDARITY project.
The workshop focused on the modelling of high-temperature heat pumps and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) systems — key components for the decarbonization of industrial heat.
This event provided an excellent opportunity to engage with other researchers and professionals, exchange technical insights, and explore potential synergies between European projects working toward a more sustainable energy future.

On May 13, 2025, Syed Safeer Mehdi Shamsi proudly represented SCO2OPTES at the workshop “(EM)Powering the EU Clean Energy Transition: The Role of LDES and Gender Equality”, hosted by AIR4NRG in Valencia, Spain.
The event brought together leading voices from the Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) Cluster — including SEHRENE, AIR4NRG, and STREAM — to discuss the technical, regulatory, and market-related challenges involved in deploying long-duration energy storage technologies.
Throughout the day, insightful conversations underscored the vital role of collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of innovative energy solutions. The workshop concluded with a forward-looking dialogue on how to achieve scalability and replicability — key to driving a meaningful and inclusive energy transition across Europe.
SCO2OP-TES AT sCO2 EUROPEAN CONFERENCE .

Delft, The Netherlands, 9-11 April 2025
The recent sCOâ‚‚ European Conference brought exciting developments in the field of sustainable energy, with the SCO2OP-TES project taking center stage. Represented by our project coordinator, the University of Genoa, the project was showcased through a scientific paper presented by Safeer Mehdi titled “Off-design analysis for a lab-scale thermally integrated pumped thermal energy storage system based on sCOâ‚‚ cycles.”
Co-authored by Syed Safeer Mehdi Shamsi, Stefano Barberis, Simone Maccarini, and Alberto Traverso, the paper highlights cutting-edge research aimed at enhancing energy storage using supercritical COâ‚‚ (sCOâ‚‚) technologies.
In addition, the team presented a poster summarizing the first year of the SCO2OP-TES project, marking a key milestone and offering a glimpse into the progress made by the consortium.
Additionally, Rafael Guedez from our partner KTH Royal Institute of Technology sharing insights from various KTH-led initiatives. His presentation included mentions of SCO2OP-TES and sister projects such as SOLARSCO2OL, SHARP-sCOâ‚‚, and FLUWS, underlining the strong collaboration across Europe in advancing clean energy solutions.

GENERAL ASSEMBLY .

On November 4-5, the SCO2OP-TES project held its second General Assembly in Thessaloniki, Greece, hosted by our valued partner, the Centre for Research & Technology Hellas (CERTH). The assembly provided an important opportunity for partners to review the progress made thus far and to strategize for the upcoming phases of the project. A highlight of the meeting was the chance to tour CERTH's impressive laboratories, which provided our team with an up-close look at the facilities and research capabilities that CERTH brings to the SCO2OP-TES project.

4TH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON CARNOT BATTERIES .

On September 24th, the SCO2OP-TES project successfully participated in the 4th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries in Stuttgart, Germany.
During the event, project coordinator Stefano Barberis from Università degli Studi di Genova, led an engaging joint workshop alongside other EU funded projects ASTERIx-CAESar, SEHRENE EU, I-UPS, and AIR4NRG project.
The workshop, titled "Why does the EU need Long Duration Energy Storage?", sparked insightful discussions about the critical role of energy storage in achieving Europe’s sustainable energy future.
